Bedanken  en openingszinnen

Je kunt op verschillende manieren iemand bedanken:

 

* Thank you for your letter.

* Thank you (so much) for your reply.

* I should like to thank you very much for ...

* I am very grateful to you for sending me ... (grateful = dankbaar)

* I was very pleased to receive ...   (receive = ontvangen)

* Thank you very much for your letter, dated ...

* In reply to your letter of ... [datum].

* With reference to your letter of ...[datum] ...[= met betrekking tot uw brief van ...]

 

 

Een voorstel / suggestie doen / vragen of iets mogelijk is

Hier zijn een paar zinnen die je kunt gebruiken wanneer je een voorstel wil doen. Zullen we ….. Zal ik…..  Ik zou graag …….

Let op het verschil tussen:

Willen = want to

Zullen = will

Zou graag = would like

 

* We could meet next month.

* I suggest you travel by ....

* What do you think of ..... ?

* I would like to work for you.

* I would like to accept your offer.

* Would you be so kind as to send me information about ...
* Would it be possible to ...
[= Zou het mogelijk zijn, dat u]
* I would be very pleased, if... [= Ik zou heel blij zijn, als]

Een reden geven

Giving reasons why you do or don’t do certain things.

 

* I am writing this letter, as I would like to work for your organisation.

* I would like to work in Great Britain, because I want to practise my English.

* As I am very interested in your country. I would like to ....

* I would love to spend my holidays in London, because I have never been in

   Britain, though I have heard a lot about it at school.

 

 

Een verzoek doen

Now you are going to learn how to ask for something.

 

* I wonder if you could help me; you see, I need some brochures about London

   for a script I intend to do for English.

* I would be very grateful if you could bring me into contact with the ..... fan-club.

* Would you be so kind as to meet me at the railway-station because I am not

   sure which bus to take.

* There is something I should like to ask you. Could you .....

* Could you please let me know, whether you agree with…

* If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. 

 

 

 

Klagen over iets

Now you are going to complain or express your disappointment.

 

* We would like to express our disappointment at ...

* I am not very pleased with ...
* Unfortunately you did not ...
[= helaas heeft u niet...]
* Unfortunately we still have not received your answer.

 

 

 

Verontschuldigingen aanbieden

Now you are going to learn how to say sorry.

 

* I am sorry my English is not all that good.

* I guess you will find plenty of mistakes in my letter.

* I hope you won’t mind the mistakes I have probably made.

* I am very sorry for not having been able to answer your letter earlier.

* I must apologize for not having thanked you for your present..

 

 

 

Advies geven

In your letters you will often ask somebody to give you some advice.

It may also happen that somebody asks your advice.

Now you are going to learn how to ask and how to give advice

 

asking for advice :                * What do you think I should do ?

                                               * Can you advice me as to what I should do ?

                                               * What shall I do …

                                               * Is it advisable to ….

giving advice        :                * I advise you to ......

                                               * If I had to do that, I would ......

                                               * The best thing to do is ....                        

 

 

Solliciteren

Now you are going to apply for a job.

 

* I am applying for the post of ... [functie] advertised in ... [naam krant]

* I speak English fluently. [= Ik spreek vloeiend Engels]
* Further details can be found in my CV. [= verdere details vindt u in mijn bijgaande       CV]
* I have had considerable experience in this area.

 

 

 

Verwijzen naar een bijlage

Now you are writing that you have enclosed something.

 

* I am enclosing a copy of  ... [ = als bijlage stuur ik u]
* Please find enclosed ...
[= bijgaand ontvangt u]
* I am enclosing a reference from my English teacher.

 

 

Vragen om antwoord en bij voorbaat bedanken

Here are some sentences you can write if you want an answer to your letter and/or if you want to thank someone in advance (= bij voorbaat)

 

* Thanking you in advance.

* I am looking forward to an early reply.

* I am looking forward to hearing from you.

* I hope you will reply as soon as possible.

* An early reply would be appreciated.
